A
photographic survey
of
some of the stones
still
visible in the
Patterson
Cemetery
On
two visits to Patterson Cemetery in Feb. 2004,
Rita
Mackin Fox took the following photos. Many of
the
stones are lying flat on the ground, are broken,
and
yet others have sunk beneath the ground.
Part of the reason for the cemetery's lack of regular
maintenance has to do with its inaccessibility.
Standing in the front field of A.O. Calico's farm
on Frog Branch, you must go down to the branch and
up the hill to reach the cemetery (slightly left of
center in the photo below in the dense grove of trees).
Among the tombstones still legible
(with identifications below each photo):
Allen Patterson (1817-1881-Mason)
Elihu Parks (1855-1895-Mason)
John D. Patterson (1822-1876-Mason)
[NOTE: Sadie Kuhlman's
list incorrectly
shows death date
as 1870; Reflections Winter 2004
issue on p. 4 also
repeated this error.]
Martha E. Ralston,
daughter of
R.A. & Z.A. Ralston
(1894-1902)
"Blessed are the Early
Dead."
John Thomas Wylie,
son of harvy &
Sallie L. Wylie
(1842-1860)
John A. Parks (1855-1876)
Under a tree near the
eastern boundary of the cemetery
is a pile of headstones,
footstones, and rocks. The prominent
tombstone in the front
is that of Harvy Wylie, who
also has another headstone
still standing in the cemetery.
